Core 4x4 Mineral Basin Off-Roading -- American Fork Canyon Trail Run

The Core 4x4 crew takes the JK and JL up to Mineral Basin in American Fork Canyon, Utah, testing suspension and enjoying fall colors on the Alpine Loop.

Core 4x4 Mineral Basin Off-Roading – American Fork Canyon Trail Run

The Core 4x4 crew loaded up a fleet of Jeep Wranglers and headed to Mineral Basin in American Fork Canyon, Utah, for a fall trail run. At 8,700 feet of elevation, surrounded by fall colors and alpine scenery, the team put their rigs through rock gardens, optional obstacles, and dusty switchbacks — and every Jeep made it through.

The Mineral Basin Trail

Mineral Basin is one of the most scenic off-road destinations in northern Utah. Located on the backside of Snowbird ski resort, the trail climbs through American Fork Canyon to roughly 8,700 feet before dropping into a wide alpine bowl with panoramic mountain views. The route includes several rock garden sections, optional obstacles, and a mix of terrain that tests vehicles at every capability level.

The Core 4x4 crew brought multiple Jeeps running different tiers of Core 4x4 suspension — from fully built rigs with long arms and lockers to more moderately equipped Wranglers. The goal was simple: enjoy the trail, test the parts, and see how each setup handled the same obstacles.

Rock Gardens and Optional Obstacles

A few miles into Mineral Basin, the crew hit an optional rock obstacle that looked fun enough to attempt. This is where the differences between builds became apparent. The rigs with Core 4x4 control arms and proper articulation walked through with careful line selection and spotter guidance. One shorter-wheelbase Jeep got tipsy on the rocks — a common challenge with short wheelbases on off-camber terrain — but recovered without drama.

The team used classic spotting calls throughout: “Turn driver, bump it, turn passenger and uphill.” Good communication between driver and spotter is what keeps rigs on their wheels on obstacles like this, regardless of how capable the vehicle is.

One Jeep in the group needed a fender adjustment after a rock encounter — as the crew put it, “Jeeps doing Jeep things.” Minor cosmetic damage is part of the game on technical terrain, and a reminder that fender flares and trimming pay for themselves on day one.

Greasing Up and Pre-Trip Prep

Before hitting the more technical sections, the crew stopped to grease the Johnny Joints on the control arms. A few pumps of grease at the trailhead keeps everything lubricated and moving smoothly, especially after sitting between trail runs. It takes five minutes and extends the life of every joint in the suspension.

This is a good habit for any off-road vehicle with greaseable suspension components. Core 4x4 Johnny Joints are designed to be rebuildable and maintainable — a quick grease before each trail run is all they need to stay in top condition.

The View from 8,700 Feet

The trail winds up to the opposite side of Snowbird, opening into a mountain bowl with views that make the dusty drive worth it. The crew spotted a moose near the top — a reminder that these high-elevation trails are genuine backcountry, not just obstacle courses.

The descent back through American Fork Canyon brought more dust than rocks. Fall conditions in this part of Utah mean dry, fine dust that coats everything — vehicles, trees, and lungs. Running in front of the group is the only way to avoid eating dust all day.

Frequently Asked Questions

The full Mineral Basin loop through American Fork Canyon takes approximately 4 to 5 hours, depending on how many stops you make and whether you attempt optional obstacles. Plan for a full day if you want to take your time and enjoy the scenery at the top.

A stock Wrangler can handle most of the main trail but may struggle on the technical rock sections and optional obstacles. A moderate lift with 33-inch tires and proper tire deflation significantly improves capability. The optional obstacles are best left to vehicles with upgraded suspension and lockers.

Yes, a quick grease before each trail run is recommended. It takes about five minutes and keeps the joints lubricated and operating smoothly. Core 4x4 Johnny Joints are designed to be maintenance-friendly and rebuildable, so regular greasing extends their service life significantly.

Late summer through early fall offers the best conditions. The fall colors at 8,700 feet are spectacular, though the trails are dusty in dry conditions. The trail is typically accessible from late June through October, depending on snowpack. Check local conditions before heading up, as early or late season snow can close higher sections.

Short-wheelbase vehicles have a higher center of gravity relative to their track width, making them more prone to tipping on off-camber terrain. The solution is careful line selection, lower tire pressure for a wider contact patch, and having a spotter guide you through technical sections. Upgraded suspension with proper articulation also helps keep all four tires on the ground.
