Mob Armor Phone Mount Install -- The Best Magnetic Phone Holder for Off-Road

Spence installs Mob Armor magnetic phone mounts in a Jeep JL, a JK, and even the family minivan -- here is why the Core 4x4 team runs them in every vehicle.

If you have ever lost your phone off the dash mid-trail or fumbled with a clunky clip-in holder, Mob Armor magnetic phone mounts solve both problems. The Core 4x4 team has been running these in their Jeeps for years — and in this quick video, Spence shows how simple the install is across multiple vehicles.

The entire install takes less than five minutes per vehicle. A thin magnetic plate sticks to the back of your phone or case, and an adhesive mount goes on your dash. From there, you just toss your phone up and the magnets do the rest — even on rough off-road terrain.

Why Magnetic Phone Mounts Beat Clip-In Holders

Spence has been using Mob Armor mounts in his Jeeps for years, and the reason is straightforward: convenience. Traditional clip-in and clamp-style phone holders require you to physically insert your phone every time you get in the vehicle. That gets old fast, and most clip holders are bulky enough to interfere with other dash controls.

Mob Armor’s magnetic system has two components:

  • A slim metal plate that adheres to the back of your phone case (or directly to your phone). It is thin enough that it does not add bulk or get caught in your pocket.
  • An adhesive-backed magnetic mount that sticks to your dash. Strong rare-earth magnets hold the phone in place, even on rough terrain.

Jump in the vehicle, toss your phone on the mount, and go. No clips, no arms, no fiddling.

Mob Armor Mount Types

Mob Armor offers several magnetic mount options, and the Core 4x4 team uses different ones depending on the vehicle:

  • Swivel Mount: Allows you to angle the phone toward you. Good for vehicles where the dash is not directly facing the driver.
  • Flush Mount (Straight): Low-profile mount that sits flat against the surface. Ideal for the small ledge on JK and JL Wrangler dashes.
  • Clip-In Mount: A traditional holder for people who prefer physical retention. Spence personally skips this one in favor of the magnetic options.

For Jeep Wranglers (JK and JL), the flat ledge just above the dash controls is the perfect mounting spot. It keeps the phone visible and accessible without blocking your line of sight.

How to Install a Mob Armor Mount in a Jeep Wrangler

The install is as simple as it gets:

  1. Pick your spot. On a JK or JL Wrangler, the small ledge above the dash vents is ideal. It keeps the phone in view and out of the way of controls.
  2. Clean the surface. Use isopropyl alcohol or the included cleaning wipe to remove any dust, oils, or protectant from the dash surface. The adhesive needs a clean, dry surface to bond properly.
  3. Peel and stick. Remove the adhesive backing from the mount and press it firmly onto the dash. Hold for 30 seconds.
  4. Attach the plate to your phone. Stick the thin magnetic plate onto the back of your phone case. If you do not use a case, it adheres directly to the phone.
  5. Mount your phone. Place the phone on the mount — the magnets grab it instantly.

That is the entire install. No drilling, no tools, no wiring.

Installing in Other Vehicles

In the video, Spence also installs a Mob Armor mount in the family minivan using the straight flush mount. The process is identical — clean the dash, stick the mount, and go. The point is that these mounts are not Jeep-specific. They work on any vehicle with a flat dash surface.

Once you have a plate on the back of your phone, every vehicle with a Mob Armor mount becomes a one-second phone dock. The Core 4x4 team has mounts in their Jeeps, trucks, and daily drivers so they never have to think about it.

Will Magnets Damage My Phone?

This is the most common concern people have. Modern smartphones use solid-state storage and do not have magnetic hard drives, so a magnet will not erase your data or damage the phone. Mob Armor’s magnets are specifically designed for phone use — strong enough to hold your phone through rough terrain, but not strong enough to interfere with phone operation.

If you use wireless charging, some magnetic plates can interfere with the charging coil. Mob Armor offers plates that are compatible with wireless charging — check the packaging for the wireless-compatible option.

Why Core 4x4 Recommends Mob Armor

Core 4x4 carries Mob Armor products because the team actually uses them. After years of testing magnetic mounts in Jeeps that see real off-road use, these are the ones that have held up:

  • Strong rare-earth magnets that hold phones through trail vibration, bumps, and even rock crawling
  • Slim phone plate that does not add pocket bulk or interfere with daily use
  • 3M adhesive backing that stays put in heat and cold
  • Multiple mount styles to fit different dash layouts and preferences
  • Quick install with no tools required

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Mob Armor uses rare-earth magnets that are strong enough to keep your phone in place through trail bumps, vibration, and even rock crawling. The Core 4x4 team has run these mounts in their Jeeps for years without issues on and off the trail.

Yes. The thin magnetic plate sticks to the back of your phone case using adhesive. It works with most cases. If you do not use a case, the plate can go directly on the phone. For best results, make sure the mounting surface is flat and clean before applying the plate.

Magnets will not damage modern smartphones since they use solid-state storage, not magnetic drives. Some magnetic plates can interfere with wireless charging by blocking the charging coil. Mob Armor offers wireless-charging-compatible plates specifically designed to work with Qi chargers.

On both the JK and JL Wrangler, the small flat ledge above the dash vents (near the windshield base) is the ideal spot. It keeps the phone visible and within reach without blocking air vents or other controls. The flush mount style works particularly well on this ledge.

The swivel mount has a ball joint that lets you angle the phone toward you, which is useful on dashes that do not face the driver directly. The flush mount sits flat and low-profile against the surface with no adjustability. For Jeep Wranglers, the flush mount on the dash ledge keeps things simple and out of the way.
